Looking for ways to volunteer and earn SSL hours this spring? Here are a few large-scale service projects that have been preapproved for SSL hours and are seeking lots of volunteer help. Seniors: This is especially important for you if you haven’t yet completed your required 75 student service learning hours for graduation! (Students who have not been enrolled in MCPS since 6th grade will have fewer required hours.)
AAUW Book Sale: Thursday, March 15-Sunday, March 25, multiple shifts available, in Gaithersburg. Assist with running the American Association of University Women’s annual book sale. Volunteers especially needed both weekends of the sale. Email with the days and times you can help, and include a phone number and the name of your school and grade.
Cherry Blossom Festival: Saturday, March 24-Sunday, April 8, 11 am-3 pm or 3:30-7 pm, in Washington. Help clean up the National Mall’s memorial parks during the festival, which brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to DC. Gloves, trash grabbers, and official shirts provided. Choose one or multiple shifts. Minimum age: 15. Email or call 301-279-6990.
USA Science & Engineering Festival: Thursday, April 5-Sunday, April 8, multiple shifts available 8 am-6 pm, in Washington. Welcome visitors and help with a variety of activities at the nation’s largest celebration of STEM. Email, call 202-459-0883, or sign up online.
Olney Days: Saturday & Sunday, April 28-29, multiple shifts available, in Olney. Assist with a variety of activities throughout the weekend, including a community cleanup, parade, and electronics recycling event. Email or call 301-332-4554.
Gaithersburg Book Festival: Saturday, May 19, multiple shifts available 10 am-6 pm, in Gaithersburg. Help set up and run this annual festival. Training provided. Minimum age: 14. Email

SSL OPPORTUNITY… Save A Life Montgomery: Opioids an d Substance Abuse Community Forum with special guest speaker Dexter Manley

The  Leaders Institute is a non-profit organization serving youth in MCPS for over 5 years. Each quarter, they run leadership classes that are SSL approved and designed to help students develop the leadership qualities and characteristics colleges and businesses are looking for.  Fall Course enrollment is underway; view the course catalog click here
